As human-beings we are meant to be connected with other human-beings; families, bands, tribes. Beyond the nuclear family we can also have an extended family or a family we've created for ourselves.. If for some reason you don't have a close relationship with your nuclear family, don't live near them, etc. it doesn't mean you have to be alone.
I've created what I call a self-made family by stepping outside my comfort zone; becoming a contributing writer for my complex newsletter, and participating in a group of aspiring jewelry makers called Drunk on Beads. In addition to my relationship with friends, doing this has allowed me to meet some great people and establish new relationships. I've been adopted into the family of a good friend which is where I celebrated Thanksgiving; I'll be having dinner with them on Christmas too.
I decided to re-define my definition of family. Family can be whatever you want it to be; your neighborhood, your church, a great Sista circle. What makes it work is what you bring to it and the role you let it play in your life. This kind of connectedness can give us the power to improve our lives and make the world a better place.
Seasons Greetings,
Jacqueline
