Giving Back

"Today is the day the Lord has made and I will rejoice and be glad in it."

At the beginning of this year I set an intention to find a volunteer opportunity. Somewhere I
felt I could be of service. My prayer was answered. My neighbor, Laura, invited me to sit
on the Board for the South Park Senior Center, a community in Seattle.

I was initially hesitant. I'd never served on a Board and wasn't sure what I could contribute. Fast-forward I've become very involved. One way I contribute is by researching grants to fund and expand the Centers programs. I'm taking an online grant writing class next month with Laura, who is also a Board member. I can't wait to see what I learn.

Erica, Master Chef

I also volunteer 3-days a week helping to serve meals to seniors and our homeless community in South Park. Working with a newly hired chef, Erica has been another unexpected benefit. She has a Bachelors of Science in nutrition from Bastyr University, teaches cooking classes, and has been a private chef. She's traveled extensively, another passion of mine, and lived in Japan for 3-years.
She definitely knows her stuff. More importantly, she has a heart for service.

Stepping outside my comfort zone by doing something I never considered has turned into a real blessing. The seasoned citizen is getting as much as I'm giving, if not more.

Here are six reasons you might consider volunteering:
  1. Make a difference
  2. Meet people.Volunteering can help you meet different kinds of people and make new friends.
  3. Be part of a community
  4. Learn new skills
  5. Take on a challenge
  6. Have fun!

Self-care = Self love
