Sullivan’s Island Was the African-American Ellis Island
I recently became a member of the NW African American Genealogy Society. At a meeting last Saturday, I learned, through a presentation by one of the members, that Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, was the port of entry into North America for abourt 40 percent of the millions of Africans enslaved in this country.
The presentation was fascinating. The presenter traced both sides of her family back to the 1700's, and talked about an international family reunion that took place in France. I've just started the research on my family and am excited about what I will discover.
