Soul Food "Plan B"

It is reported that two out of three adults in the US are considered overweight or obese. Being over-weight puts a person at increased risk for chronic diseases, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, and some forms of cancer. There is an extremely high rate of the mentioned diseases in the Black community. Healthy eating habits are essential for our overall health but can be extremely challenging during the holiday season.   Here are a few healthy alternatives:
  • Replace heavy whipping cream with evaporated skim milk or one part milk/cream.
  • If a recipe calls for whole milk use 1% or fat-free.
  • Substitute 2 egg whites for each egg needed in your recipe.
  • Replace the ham hock with smoked turkey.
  • Canola and olive oils are good replacements for butter.
  • Use herbs and spices to replace salt.
Take the very best care of yourself and your family from the inside to the skin-side.

Together we thrive,

Jacqueline
