The two major categories of memory are short-term and long-term memory. The short-term memory stores information like names of people you recently met or where you put your car keys. Our long-term memory stores events that occurred years ago; your second grade teacher, your first job, what you wore to your prom. As we age our short-term memory declines which can cause difficulty in remembering details of recent events. Memory loss doesn't necessarily get worse over time and is not the same as dementia.
Lifestyle changes can help:
- Exercise your mind. "Use it or lose it" applies to our mental health as well as or physical well-being. Mind games, challenging reading, taking a class can all help you keep your brain strong.
- Exercise your body. Physical exercise contributes to better mental function by improving circulation.
- Eat a diet rich in antioxidants & omega-3-fatty acids. Fruits and vegetables are the best sources of antioxidants. Cold-water fish and walnuts provide omega-3's. Flax seeds or flax seed oil (found at most health food stores) are another source of omega-3's.
- Avoid alcohol. Alcohol can have a damaging effect on brain cells.(moderation)!
Together we thrive,
Jacqueline
