As mentioned, I'm training to do a 10-K walking marathon at the end of June. In preparation my goal is to walk 2-3 miles, 3-days a week. So far, so good! Last Saturday, I walked a 5-K with the group I belong to, Sound Steps. Sound Steps is a volunteer supported walking program here in Seattle for adults 50+ (that would include me). There goal is to encourage health and wellness through physical activity and social interaction. My kind of stuff!
Its a year-round program and is free. There are walking groups all over the Seattle area so you can find a group near you. There's also various levels of walkers, making it easy to find a group that's best for you too. Several people in the group are in their 80's & one woman uses a walker.
Another great thing about walking is you don't need special equipment, special attair or a membership. I would suggest you invest in a decent pair of walking shoes if you're going to walk on a regular basis.

Saturday was great in that two friends from my bead group, Eunice & Pat, also participated. It wasn't a race which allowed everyone to walk at their own pace; 4 times around the track. The weather cooperated too; I was told it snowed last year but they walked anyway.
Each week our trainer, Robert, increases our mileage to get us ready for the big day. I'll keep you posted.
Check to see if there is a Sound Steps program in your area or something like it. If not, start your own walking group. You might also check American Volkssport Assoication to find a walking club in your state.
Together we thrive,
Jacqueline
