What exactly is a food desert? According to United States Department of Agriculture it is where at least 20 percent of people earn below the poverty line and 33 percent live more than a mile from a supermarket (10 miles in rural areas). There are 17 of these areas in King County, most of them in South Seattle but also in Tukwila to Auburn and Federal Way.
It's eye-opening to realize that accessing healthy, nutritious food is not possible for everybody so maybe shouldn't be taken for granted.
I invite you to take a closer look at your food choices. Do you have access? Can you afford better choices? If the answer is yes, look at the choices you're making. Could they be better!
