Question: “Do I really need to wear sunscreen 365 days a year?”
Answer: Yes! For those of you using a foundation with sunscreen, it’s not enough protection so put a layer of sunscreen on top. If you’re going to the beach apply SPF from head to toe and reapply every 80 minutes especially after swimming, according to Robert A. Weiss, MD, president of the American Society for Dermatological Surgery.
Having dark skin does not exempt you from the need for sunscreen. Darker skin does not sunburn as easily as fair skin but it can still be damaged from excessive sun exposure. Regardless of your skin type, it’s important to protect your skin from sun exposure by wearing sunscreen.
Skin Type:
- Type 1 – Always burns, never tans (pale white skin)
- Type 2 – Always burns easily, tans minimally (white skin)
- Type 3 – Burns moderately, tans uniformly (light brown skin)
- Type 4 – Burns minimally, always tans well (moderate brown skin)
- Type 5 – Rarely burns, tans profusely (dark brown skin)
- Type 6 – Never burns (deeply pigmented dark brown skin)
