The Big 3

There are literally thousands of trains of thought on the pros and cons of taking supplements. Of course most people know the ideal is to get all our nutrients from the foods we eat. It's a noble thought but its not happening for the majority of folks. According to the infamous TV sensation, Dr. OZ, there are 3 supplements that are absolutely essential for everyone to take:
  1. A Multivitamin - A multivitamin ensures that we get all the essential vitamins and minerals recommended for each day. This guards against chronic illnesses such as breast cancer, colon cancer and heart disease. The typical multivitamin contains about 10 vitamins & 10 minerals A, C, D, E, K, and minerals such as potassium and zinc. Make sure it also has iodine (important for the heart, thyroid, & brain). Be sure to look for 100% Daily Value (DV). He also suggests avoiding mega doses (500% DV). Lastly, be sure to split your vultivitamin into 2 doses. Take half in the morning & half at night since the body can only absorb so many vitamins at a given time--This was news to me!
  2. Omega-3 Fatty Acids/Fish Oil - Omega-3 fatty acids are important fats that boost our brain, protect the heart & arteries, fight wrinkles, lubricate the joints. The important thing to remember when buying this supplement is to look for one that contains 600mg of DHA. Dr. Oz says you may have to take more than 1 pill to get this dose. He also recommends that it be taken at breakfast. Keep your fish oil in the refrig to keep it from spoiling.
  3. Calcium with Magnesium - Lack of calcium in the diet will rob this nutrient from our bones. Taken together not only are the bones supported but the teeth and muscles too. Choose a supplement that contains 600mg of calcium with 400mg of magnesium and take once a day.
I have taken a multivitamin for years and Omega 3's on and off. I'm sure calcium with magnesium would be helpful for me at this stage of my life. I want to do everything within my power to keep myself healthy from the inside to the skin side!

All this said, DO NOT take anything before consulting your healthcare professional especially if you're already taking other medications.

Blessings,

Jacqueline
