GMO - What is it?

There's a lot of controversy around GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) these days. Seattle currently has an initiative on the ballot with considerable press on the pros and cons of labeling these foods.

You may be thinking, what does GMO actually mean. GMOs are plants or animals that have undergone a process wherein scientists alter their genes with DNA from different species of living organism, bacteria, or viruses to get desired traits such as resistance to disease or tolerance of pesticides.

A few examples of genetically modified foods are

Papayas - Now 77 percent of Hawaiian papayas are genetically engineered.

Milk Milk contains something called the bovine growth hormone, a genetically
engineered variation on a natural hormone injected into dairy cows to increase milk production. Many milk brands that are free of the GE hormone label their milk but still approximately 40 percent of the dairy products, including ice cream and cheese contain the GE hormone.

Corn on the cob - 90 percent of the corn grown in the US is genetically modified but most of it is used for animal feed or ethanol. Sweet corn--the kind we buy to grill or steam was GMO-free until Monsanto produced its first GE harvest of sweet. According to article written by Mother Jones, consumers petitioned Whole Foods and Trader Joe's to not carry the GE sweet corn but states that Walmart has begun stocking it without any label.
