Buyer Beware

It turns out that all food that are labeled "natural" may not be. There is currently no strict definition of what constitutes a natural food. This issue could be changing soon because the federal court judges recently requested the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) to determine whether the term can be used to describe foods containing GMOs to help resolve pending class action suits against general Mills, Campbell Soup Company, and Gruma Corporation; they manufacturer tortillas.

I got some first-hand information regarding this subject last Friday evening. I attended a healthy cooking class sponsored by my neighborhood chiropractor. In conversation with a woman who is part of a small collective of ranchers in Walla Walla, WA, she talked about some of the same things mentioned above in regards to organic meat.

She said that just because meat in labeled organic doesn't mean it hasn't been fed GMO products. She went on to say that to insure you're getting organic meat the label should read 100% grass fed. The ranchers in the collective she;s a part of also state that their meat is:

  • Hormone Free
  • No Antibiotics
  • 100% Gluten-free
  • No Fillers
  • No MSG

It's true. You can learn something new everyday.
