Is Your Diet Aging You?

If you're like me you want to be healthy on the inside as well as the outside. According to the American Heart Association, we should keep trans-fats to less than 1% of our daily diet.

Anything that is deep fried in oil is laden with trans fats; this contributes to inflammation, a major contributor to aging.

Foods high in saturated fats such as processed meats contribute to inflammation too. The key with meat is to keep it lean to minimize saturated fats. The USDA's 2010 dietary guidelines recommend eating a variety of protein foods, including lean meats.

The jury is still out on alcohol. Some alcohol may be good for you, but too much can definitely cause premature aging. Some researchers say that one or two alcoholic drinks per day may be good for your heart.

If you don't drink, health experts don't advise you to start. If you do drink, you should check with your doctor to make sure your drinking is in line with your particular health concerns.

Here in the Northwest, I have access to great fresh salmon which I eat a lot of. I also love chicken and incorporate it into my diet too. One of my favorite meals to prepare is a vegetable/chicken stir-fry. I don't really cook so I try to keep my home-cooked meals simple, healthy & quick

Chicken/Snow Pea Stir-fry:

  • 2 medium-size chicken thighs cut in strips - seasoned. I use 21-Seasonings Salute found at Trader Joe's.
  • Snow Peas - You can use broccoli, zucchini, or any green vegetable.
  • Mushrooms - 5-6 depending on size, sliced.
  • Water Chestnuts, sliced. Can be found in the Asian section of most grocery stores.
  • Diced onion
  • Garlic (I use crushed garlic from a jar) so approximately 1 Tablespoon. I love garlic!

Saute seasoned chicken, onions & crushed garlic and set aside. Adding a little more olive to the skillet, saute the snow peas, mushrooms, water chestnuts for about 2-3 minutes, add chicken & a little low-sodium soy saute. Serve over rice (I use brown rice).

Self-care = Self love.

Together we thrive,

Jacqueline
